The Washington Park Conservancy is a grassroots organization founded by Madiem Kawa in 2008. Madiem is a resident of Woodlawn and live across the street from the park. After seeing such a beautiful park being underserved, as an Openlands Treekeeper, Madiem began pruning and mulching trees and picking up trash in the play grounds. Later, Madiem tried many ways to engage the community to volunteer but the progress was slow. However, few months after becoming Washington Park's designated site steward, registered through Chicago District, more volunteers began to assist and over 3000 volunteer hours later, the park as become cleaner and welcoming.
